Mark Giordano is one of the five best defensemen in the NHL, and now he’s being paid like one.
The Calgary Flames captain and No. 1 blueliner signed a six-year contract extension Tuesday, the team announced. Chris Johnston of Sportsnet reported the deal is worth $40.5 million, or $6.75 million per season.

Giordano has one more season remaining on his current contract.
The 32-year-old defenseman was the clear favorite for the Norris Trophy last season before suffering a season-ending biceps injury in February. He still finished with 48 points (11 goals, 37 assists) in 61 games.
The Flames now have a blue line that includes Giordano signed through 2021-22 at $6.75 million, T.J. Brodie through 2019-20 at $4.65 million and Dougie Hamilton through 2020-21 at $5.75 million. It’s a solid foundation for a Flames team that enters the 2015-16 campaign with high expectations following a second-round playoff appearance last season.
