The Buffalo Bills have reached the end of an era.

The Bills released longtime running back Fred Jackson on Monday morning, the team announced.

“Today, we had to make the difficult decision to release Fred Jackson,” Bills general manager Doug Whaley said in a statement. “He had an incredible career for this organization for the past 10 years. We thank Fred for his hard work, dedication and leadership during his tenure with the Buffalo Bills.

“Fred has inspired the city of Buffalo in a number of ways. Fred and his family have been dedicated to this community, and we can’t thank them enough for their contributions throughout his career.”

The 34-year-old’s workload was cut in recent seasons, as he gave way to younger backs and became more of an afterthought in the Buffalo offense. That trend was likely to continue this season after the Bills acquired LeSean McCoy from the Philadelphia Eagles in the offseason.

Jackson leaves the Bills as their No. 3 all-time leading rusher (5,646 yards), and he ranks fourth in franchise history in rushing touchdowns (30).
