Marco Matias endeared himself to his new fans and entered the running for an annual honor with two touches of the ball.

Matias scored a stunning volley Saturday in Sheffield Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with Leeds United. The goal was Matias’ first for Sheffield Wednesday following his summer transfer to the Championship (English second division) from Portuguese club Vitoria Guimaraes.

Matias scored in the 37th minute by running onto a long pass, flicking the ball to himself with his right foot and volleying his shot past goalkeeper Marco Silvestre.

Matias, 26, failed to score in his first four appearances for Sheffield Wednesday but the Portuguese forward announced his arrival to the English soccer scene with a “Goal of the Season” contender. We don’t know how long the former Portugal Under-21 international will remain at Sheffield Wednesday but we’re certain he’ll have a hard time scoring a better goal for the Owls than his first.
