Matt Barnes’ first start of the year for the Boston Red Sox did not go well.
The 25-year-old lasted five innings and allowed six earned runs in an 8-2 loss at Fenway Park. While he struggled throughout, he did strike out seven batters.
“Of course Barnes making that adjustment from the bullpen to the starting rotation, he started that in Triple-A and now moving to the big leagues in that capacity,” NESN’s Jerry Remy said on “Red Sox Gameday Live” before Boston hosted the Kansas City Royals on Saturday. “It gives him the chance to show off all three pitches — a fastball, the breaking ball and the changeup.”
