Mike Aviles once was traded by the Boston Red Sox to the Toronto Blue Jays as compensation for manager John Farrell. Aviles has never played for Farrell, but he knows what kind of character Farrell has thanks to an unlikely phone call after the trade.
“From the little bit I got to know him, when I got traded for him going from Boston to Toronto, he gave me a call and we talked for about 25 minutes and he was explaining … where to live, how it would be for the family and things like that,” the Cleveland Indians infielder said on “Red Sox Gameday Live” before his team’s matchup with the Red Sox on Tuesday. “In situations like that you usually don’t have the manager calling you, especially a guy you have never played for. And it showed me the kind of character he had.”
