FOXBORO, Mass. — Tyler Gaffney’s second NFL season is ending the same way as his first.

The running back was placed on injured reserve Thursday after clearing waivers. The New England Patriots released Gaffney on Wednesday after he was hurt in the first week of training camp.

The Patriots claimed Gaffney off waivers from the Carolina Panthers last summer and stored him on their 90-man roster until September, when they placed him on injured reserve without cutting him. He was drafted by the Panthers No. 204 overall in the 2014 NFL Draft out of Stanford.

Gaffney’s placement on injured reserve leaves the Patriots with 89 players on their 90-man roster. LeGarrette Blount, Jonas Gray, Brandon Bolden, James White, Travaris Cadet, Dion Lewis and Tony Creecy make up the running back depth chart.
