BOSTON — Pablo Sandoval’s injury forced the Red Sox to add infield depth.
The Red Sox recalled third baseman/first baseman Travis Shaw before Saturday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park. Boston optioned right-handed reliever Jonathan Aro to make room for Shaw on the 25-man roster.
Shaw immediately was inserted into the Red Sox’s starting lineup at third base Saturday. Sandoval, the team’s usual third baseman, is considered day to day after being struck on the forearm/wrist by a pitch from Chris Sale in Thursday night’s game against the Chicago White Sox.
“Panda is showing some improvement,” Farrell said before Saturday’s game. “He’s going to try and swing a bat here a little bit later this morning, but the soreness and swelling still persists. Whether or not he’s available in this series remains to be seen.”
This marks Shaw’s fifth major league stint this season. The 25-year-old is 3-for-15 with two runs scored and a walk in nine games with Boston.
