The Boston Red Sox seemed to have control over the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday until one bad inning changed everything.
The Red Sox had a 4-2 lead headed into the bottom of the seventh inning, but starter Wade Miley was tagged for three runs, and the rest was history. The bullpen managed to hold it down, but Boston’s offense couldn’t muster any more runs.
Let’s take a look at how things went down at U.S. Cellular Field.
GAME IN A WORD
Sloppy.
Miley managed to limit the damage despite giving up a lot of hits, but it eventually caught up to him in the seventh. But neither team played particularly great baseball.
The White Sox gave up a Little League home run to Mookie Betts, and there were some instances of poor baserunning from both teams. Neither the Red Sox nor the White Sox played horribly, but there definitely were a handful of mistakes that they’ll want to forget Wednesday.
IT WAS OVER WHEN …
Miley imploded in the seventh inning.
The Red Sox weren’t having a very flashy offensive night, and Miley erasing the little cushion they had didn’t make things any better.
IN THE BATTER’S BOX
— Mookie Betts bounced back from a quiet Monday to help Boston put some runs on the board. The center fielder put the Red Sox up 2-1 in the third inning with a Little League home run — he scored Josh Rutledge with a double, then crossed home on a throwing error — and Pablo Sandoval knocked him in during the sixth to give Boston a 3-2 lead.
Betts finished the night 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
— Rutledge provided some offense, too, going 2-for-3 with a run scored.
— Overall, it wasn’t a great offensive night for the Red Sox, but they made most of their hits count. And they looked primed to add more runs in the fifth inning, but Jackie Bradley Jr. was caught stealing second with two outs and Ryan Hanigan on third.
ON THE BUMP
— The White Sox made a lot of contact off Miley, but the left-hander was able to keep the runs to a minimum through most of his outing. Then, the seventh inning happened.
Miley entered the seventh with a 4-2 lead, even though he had given up 10 hits. But three more hits and a walk later, the White Sox had a 5-4 lead, and Miley was subbed for Alexi Ogando. Miley finished the night with five earned runs on thirteen hits with three strikeouts and a walk over 7 2/3 innings.
— Ogando and Tommy Layne both kept Chicago’s lead at just one run. Ogando ended Miley’s seventh with a quick flyout, but gave up two straight singles in the eighth that were sandwiched between another flyout and a strikeout.
Layne ended the eighth by striking out Adam Eaton on a foul bunt.
UP NEXT
The Red Sox will finish out their series against the White Sox on Wednesday with another 8:10 p.m. ET start. Rick Porcello will make his first start since his disabled list stint, and it’ll come against American League strikeout leader Chris Sale.
