Report: Geno Smith ‘Deserved’ To Be Punched In Face By IK Enemkpali

There are at least two sides to every story, especially when the New York Jets are involved.

Jets head coach Todd Bowles announced earlier this week that quarterback Geno Smith would miss six to 10 weeks after having his jaw broken in a locker room altercation. According to Bowles, Smith was sucker-punched by linebacker IK Enemkpali. Not long after, Enemkpali was released.

However, the New York Daily News reported Thursday that Smith might have had it coming. Or at least that’s what some close to the situation are saying.

One source told the New York Daily News’ Manish Mehta that Smith was “up in (Enemkpali’s) face and pointed/touched his face,” while another source straight-up told Mehta “Geno deserved it.”

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Tuesday the dispute was over $600, which Enemkpali claimed Smith owed him. Enemkpali reportedly bought Smith a plane ticket to attend Enemkpali’s football camp, but Smith wasn’t able to attend. Smith hadn’t paid back Enemkpali, and that’s what led to the altercation, per Schefter.

Sources told Schefter that Smith did intend to pay back Enemkpali, but the Daily News report might contradict that. Even if it doesn’t, plenty of questions have yet to be answered in this entire ordeal.

Enemkpali was signed by former Jets head coach and current Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan on Wednesday.
