It appears New York Giants co-owner John Mara won’t be getting involved in Deflategate settlement talks.
Judge Richard M. Berman, who is overseeing the Deflategate talks, recently asked the NFL to contact Mara, who is the chairman of the league’s chief executive committee. However, league lawyers rejected Berman’s request and declined to get Mara involved in the case, sources told ESPN’s Chris Mortensen.
The NFL’s main reasoning to keep Mara out, according to Mortensen, was that the entire case falls solely under the jurisdiction of commissioner Roger Goodell. The league also reportedly noted that involving Mara would be a conflict of interest, since New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady’s potential four-game suspension would keep him out of a Week 5 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys, the Giants’ NFC East rival.
The league informed Mara of the news and the co-owner agreed with their decision, according to Mortensen’s sources.
