The New England Patriots reportedly added tight end depth in a trade Tuesday.
The Patriots acquired tight end Asante Cleveland from the San Francisco 49ers, a source told CSNBayArea.com’s Matt Maiocco. Cleveland, who’s 6-foot-5 and 260 pounds, went undrafted out of Miami last offseason and played in six games for the 49ers last year, although he didn’t catch a pass.
Cleveland ran a 4.88-second 40-yard dash at his pro day last April, with a 7.33-second three-cone, 4.45-second short shuttle, 9-foot, 8-inch broad jump and 32.5-inch vertical leap.
Cleveland caught just 14 passes for 151 yards and one touchdown in four seasons at Miami. He had three catches for 10 yards in the 49ers’ preseason opener against the Houston Texans on Saturday.
With Patriots tight ends Jake Bequette and Scott Chandler currently injured, Cleveland will join Rob Gronkowski, Michael Hoomanawanui, Jimmay Mundine and Logan Stokes as tight end depth.
UPDATE (12:20 p.m. ET): The Patriots sent offensive lineman Jordan Devey to the 49ers in the trade, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Devey played in seven games, starting four at guard, for the Patriots last season. He mostly was used as an extra offensive lineman in Thursday’s preseason opener against the Green Bay Packers.
UPDATE (5:10 p.m. ET): The Patriots confirmed they have acquired Cleveland from the 49ers in exchange for Devey.
