Liverpool simultaneously tied down and shipped out Sheyi Ojo, and it’s all for his own good.

Ojo signed a new contract with Liverpool on Tuesday. The teenage forward then joined Wolverhampton Wanderers on a youth loan for the 2015-16 season, Liverpool announced on its website. Both transactions should help secure Ojo’s long-term future at Liverpool and help him progress from prospect to first-team contributor in the coming years.

Ojo, 18, is a graduate of Liverpool’s academy but he has yet to make his first-team debut for the Reds. Ojo appeared on Liverpool’s bench for two games last season, but his only competitive action came during a loan spell with Wigan Athletic in the Championship (English second division). Ojo played 11 games with the Lactics last term, and he expects to spend the next 10-plus months at the same level with Wolves.

Ojo told Wolves’ website he’s excited to help his temporary team pursue its targets in 2015-16.

“It’s a great feeling,” Ojo said, according to wolves.co.uk. “I’m looking forward to the upcoming season. Hopefully we can have a good year and push for promotion.

“It’s a really good club, it’s got great facilities. All of the players are nice, they have welcomed me to the club, and the staff are brilliant as well.

“Everything’s going well, I’m just looking forward to starting the season at the weekend.”

Ojo likely will return to Liverpool after the 2015-16 season a more experienced and confident player.
