Liverpool fans must wait the better part of a year before they can see Taiwo Awoniyi in the flesh.

Liverpool signed Awoniyi on Monday from Imperial Academy in Nigeria, the Reds announced on their website. Liverpool immediately loaned Awoniyi, 18, to Bundesliga 2 (German second division) club FSV Frankfurt.

Liverpool paid Imperial Academy around £400,000 ($614,000) for Awoniyi, according to the Press Association and Agence France-Presse.

Awoniyi is a hot prospect in Nigeria, having represented his country at the U-17, U-20 and U-23 levels. Nigeria called up Awoniyi to its senior team in 2013, but he didn’t make an appearance for the Super Eagles.

Awoniyi described his playing style and hopes for the coming months Monday in an interview with Liverpool’s website.

“I’m a striker and I love scoring goals,” Awoniyi said. “I love helping my team to victory. I assist a lot and I love scoring goals for my team.

“My aim on loan is to go there and try to develop myself very well, so that when I come back to Liverpool, I’ll be able to add value to the team.”

Awoniyi’s career is in its formative stage. Check out what he has done so far.
