Western Michigan Uses Onside Kick To Give Scholarship; Player Muffs It (Video)

The Western Michigan football team recently did something really cool, which actually doubled as some internal scouting and evaluating.

The cool part of the story is the team gave walk-on Trevor Sweeney a full scholarship. That’s really neat, and Sweeney probably earned that honor.

Like many other college teams, the Broncos tried to go viral by surprising Sweeney with the scholarship, so they taped a note to a football and literally kicked it at him. In what looked like a practice for onside kicks and the hands team, the ball was kicked at Sweeney. Only one problem: He muffed the kick.

Not only did Sweeney botch the fielding of the kick, he didn’t immediately realize there was anything on the football. He eventually did, though, and it turned into a pretty special moment for him and his teammates.

So while Sweeney gained a scholarship, he might have lost his place on the hands team.
