The Boston Bruins required overtime Saturday night for the third time in as many games, and for a third time, they emerged victorious.
Torey Krug netted a power-play goal at the 1:58 mark of the 3-on-3 extra session to give the Bruins a 4-3 win over the Detroit Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena. Boston has yet to lose in four preseason games.
David Krejci carried the Bruins’ offense in the first period, scoring goals on his first two shots of the game (with one coming on the power play). The veteran center, who was limited to 47 games last season, has recorded two points in each of the two games he’s played in this preseason.
Brandon Carlo and Boston College product Tommy Cross assisted on the first tally, which came at the 8:20 mark of the period, and Krug was credited with the helper on the second, which came less than three minutes later.
Power plays were prevalent in that opening frame, with each team earning three trips to the penalty box.
Detroit quickly stormed back, with Henrik Zetterberg putting a snap shot past Bruins goalie Malcolm Subban later in the first, and Tomas Tatar deflecting in a Kyle Quincey shot in the opening minute of the second. The Red Wings also had a first-period goal disallowed due to goaltender interference.
Brian Ferlin put Boston back ahead when he beat Detroit goalie Petr Mrazek with just under five minutes remaining in the second. The middle period also featured a rare fight by Bruins center Chris Kelly, who’d dropped the gloves just six times in his NHL career, according to HockeyFights.com.
The Bruins outshot the Red Wings 12-5 in the second but managed just one goal.
Jakub Kindl’s equalizer was the only goal scored in the third. Subban, one of four candidates for the Bruins’ backup goalie spot, played all 61-plus minutes and finished with 18 saves.
Just three preseason games remain for the Bruins. They’ll host the Red Wings on Monday at TD Garden before visiting the New York Rangers on Wednesday and Washington Capitals on Friday.
