The St. Louis Cardinals’ push for the National League Central crown was pushed to the back burner Monday night as a terrifying scene unfolded in Pittsburgh.
The Cardinals and Pirates are battling for the NL Central, but that took a backseat to the health of Cardinals outfielder Stephen Piscotty after he was involved in a scary collision with teammate Peter Bourjos.
The two outfielders chased down a ball hit by Pittsburgh’s Josh Harrison in the bottom of the seventh inning when they collided. Bourjos made a sliding catch, but in the process his knee slammed directly into Piscotty’s head.
It was immediately evident Piscotty was in a bad way. His body was almost completely motionless and he appeared to be bleeding from the mouth.

Piscotty waved to the crowd as he was carried off the field, and the Cardinals got good news later in the night. The team announced Piscotty suffered a bruise on his head, but all of his tests were negative. He was held overnight at a hospital for observation.
The Cardinals also went on to win the game.
