Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s father doesn’t think too highly of Manny Pacquiao.
Floyd Mayweather Sr. told FightHype.com this week he believes his son’s next opponent, Andre Berto, will pose a bigger challenge than Pacquiao, whom Mayweather Jr. defeated by unanimous decision in May.
Mayweather Sr., a former professional boxer himself, didn’t stop there, though. The 62-year-old trainer ripped his son’s last opponent for saying a shoulder injury played a role in the fight’s result.
“Pacquiao’s just a liar,” Mayweather Sr. said. “He’s a liar with no skills.”
“He wants to make up excuses,” the older Mayweather added. “There was nothing wrong with his arm, was nothing wrong with his eyes, was nothing wrong with his lips. Something was wrong with his heart.”
Pacquiao underwent surgery on his injured shoulder days after his fight against Mayweather Jr. Three months later, Pacquiao insists he’s “fine,” telling The Philippine Star recently that God and swimming in salt water helped him heal without ever seeing a doctor or doing rehab following the procedure.
Mayweather Sr., as you might expect, thinks that’s all a bunch of baloney.
“How’s your arm going to heal that fast? I don’t care what kind of water you put on your arm,” Mayweather Sr. told FightHype.com. “When your arm is messed up, man, you’re messed up for a while. You don’t get over something like that in two or three (months).”
Perhaps someday we’ll see a rematch between Mayweather Jr. and Pacquiao — hopefully, it’ll be better than their first fight — but The Money Team must first focus on Berto, who, despite being an underdog, has been training hard in the hopes of shocking the world Sept. 12 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
