Jace Amaro won’t take the next step this season.
New York Jets head coach Todd Bowles announced Tuesday that the tight end has been placed on injured reserve with a torn labrum. The second-year pro will undergo surgery on his injured shoulder and miss the entire 2015 season.
Amaro suffered the injury when he landed awkwardly in the Jets’ preseason opener against the Detroit Lions. He hadn’t practiced since going down, but the injury initially wasn’t believed to be serious.
Amaro’s absence is a sizable blow to New York’s offense. Amaro, a second-round pick (No. 49 overall) out of Texas Tech in 2014, had 38 catches for 345 yards and two touchdowns in his rookie season. The 23-year-old figured to give the Jets a legitimate pass-catching tight end in his sophomore campaign, but quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick and/or Geno Smith now will need to look elsewhere.
Jeff Cumberland, Kellen Davis, Arthur Lynch and Wes Saxton are the tight ends remaining on the Jets’ roster.
