The last time the New York Mets and Chicago Cubs made the playoffs, George W. Bush still was the president. That was until Saturday, though.
The Mets clinched the National League East title with a 10-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds, and the Cubs celebrated their postseason berth after losing to the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-0.
New York will play in the postseason for the first time since 2006. The one constant during that long drought has been David Wright, who professed his appreciation for the franchise and its fans after the win.
His teammates reciprocated that love with this awesome moment in the clubhouse.
It was a different situation for the Cubs. They clinched their first playoff berth since 2008 on Friday when the San Francisco Giants lost to the Oakland Athletics. The team pushed off the celebration until after Saturday’s game.
