The Boston Red Sox have promoted from within.

The Red Sox named Mike Hazen their new senior vice president/general manager Thursday. Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski made the announcement.

“Over his 10 years with the Red Sox, Mike has proven to be an invaluable member of the baseball operations department,” said Dombrowski, who was hired by the organization in August, in a press release. “We are thrilled to have him in this position and I’m excited to have him working with me on every aspect of baseball operations.”

Hazen is in the midst of his 10th season in the Red Sox front office. He was promoted to senior vice president/assistant general manager in January, at which point he continued to work alongside former Red Sox GM Ben Cherington, who departed last month when Boston hired Dombrowski.

Hazen began his tenure with the Red Sox as the team’s director of player development in February 2006. The 39-year-old is very familiar with the organization and is expected to play a key role in helping Boston improve after back-to-back disappointing seasons on the heels of a World Series title in 2013.

“Today is a great day for the Boston Red Sox,” executive vice president/COO Sam Kennedy said Thursday in the release announcing Hazen’s promotion. “Mike’s leadership, work ethic, and passion for the game are second to none. His experience, combined with his local roots, make him the perfect choice to work alongside Dave as we head into 2016.”

Hazen is a Massachusetts native who’s worked in Major League Baseball for 15 seasons.
