5:48 p.m.:Â The Patriots made their cuts official. The final three are WR Jalen Saunders, S Brandon King and CB Daxton Swanson.
They also cut TE Asante Cleveland, LB Darius Fleming, RB Jonas Gray, CB Robert McClain, DL Zach Moore, WR Reggie Wayne, DB Justin Coleman and LB Xzavier Dickson, as previously reported.
5:36 p.m.:Â Based on Twitter chatter, it looks like Chris Harper, Rufus Johnson and Dion Lewis have made the Patriots’ initial 53-man roster.
4:51 p.m.:Â The Patriots cut LB Xzavier Dickson, according to a source. The Patriots have three more cuts to go. Dickson was the Patriots’ final pick in the 2015 NFL draft.
4:47 p.m.:Â The Patriots will place LaFell on PUP/reserve, a source told ESPN’s Field Yates. He can return Oct. 25 against the New York Jets. The Patriots have four more cuts to go.
4:35 p.m.:Â It appears Brandon LaFell will begin the season on the physically unable to perform/reserve list. He tweeted “10/25,” which would be the date he’s eligible to return to the regular-season roster. That’s Week 7 against the New York Jets.
LaFell has yet to practice after having surgery to repair an injured foot. If he’s placed on PUP, then the Patriots have four cuts to go.
4:31 p.m.:Â The Patriots released defensive end Zach Moore, a source told the Boston Herald’s Jeff Howe. There are five more cuts to go.
4:09 p.m.:Â The Patriots waived tight end Asante Cleveland, according to a source. The Patriots have six moves to make.
4:07 p.m.:Â The Patriots officially released running back Jonas Gray, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported.
3:55 p.m.:Â The Patriots are cutting cornerback Justin Coleman one day after signing him, according to a source. The Patriots cut LB Darius Fleming, a source told the Boston Herald’s Jeff Howe. The Patriots must cut seven more players by 4 p.m. ET.
3:41 p.m.:Â Wayne asked to be released, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
3:25 p.m.:Â Reggie Wayne will be left off the Patriots’ 53-man roster, a source told ESPN’s Josina Anderson. Wayne wasn’t at practice Saturday afternoon. With Wayne off, the Patriots now have nine cuts to make before they’re down to 53 players.
1:37 p.m.: The Patriots could try to trade Gray, ESPN’s Field Yates reports. Gray hasn’t been told he’s been cut yet, a source told the Boston Herald’s Jeff Howe.
The Patriots also are “actively” shopping for a big-bodied wide receiver, according to a league source.
1:14 p.m.:Â The Patriots cut running back Jonas Gray, a source told Mark Daniels of the Providence Journal.
12:43 p.m.:Â The Patriots cut veteran cornerback Robert McClain, a source told NEPatriotsDraft.com’s Mike Loyko.
12:35 p.m. ET:Â Media availability in the Patriots’ locker room occurred before practice, and it appears the team will wait to make their cuts until after players come off the field. All players, even those firmly on the roster bubble, were getting suited up for practice.
ORIGINAL: FOXBORO, Mass. — The toughest day of the year has arrived for NFL teams.
The New England Patriots must trim their roster to 53 players by Saturday at 4 p.m. ET. The Patriots currently have 66 players on their roster, but since LeGarrette Blount begins the season with a one-game suspension, the team only needs to cut 12 guys.
The Patriots released quarterback Ryan Lindley, running back Tony Creecy, wide receivers Zach D’Orazio and DaVaris Daniels, offensive linemen Ryan Groy, Caylin Hauptmann and Chris Martin, defensive linemen A.J. Pataiali’i and Casey Walker and linebacker James Morris on Friday.
The Patriots practice at 12:50 p.m. ET, so it will be interesting to see if they make their cuts before or after their first session of the regular season. They could elect to keep 10 players around to form a scout team, like they would have in the regular season with a practice squad. They would have to release those players almost immediately after practice.
