FOXBORO, Mass. — For what the New England Patriots lack in wide receiver depth on their 53-man roster, they more than make up for it on the practice squad.
Wide receiver Chris Harper, who cleared waivers Wednesday at 4 p.m., confirmed to reporters in the Patriots’ locker room that he was signed to he practice squad Thursday. Harper joins fellow wideouts Kenbrell Thompkins and Nathan Palmer on the Patriots’ scout team. The Patriots had an open spot on their practice squad.
The Patriots have Julian Edelman, Danny Amendola, Aaron Dobson and Matthew Slater on their active roster, and they reportedly acquired KeShawn Martin from the Houston Texans in a trade Wednesday.
Harper shined during the preseason, catching 15 passes for 150 yards with a touchdown. He played just 11 snaps in the Patriots’ Week 1 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers but wasn’t targeted. Harper made the Patriots’ initial 53-man roster in part because of injuries suffered by Brian Tyms and Brandon Gibson. No. 2 receiver Brandon LaFell also began the season on the physically unable to perform list.
