The Boston Red Sox added bullpen depth Friday.
The Red Sox announced they had claimed right-handed reliever Roman Mendez off waivers from the Texas Rangers. To make room for Mendez on the 40-man roster, the Red Sox moved closer Koji Uehara to the 60-day disabled list.
The Red Sox are familiar with the 25-year-old pitcher, whom they signed in 2007 as an amateur free agent. He eventually was traded to the Rangers in 2010 as part of the deal that brought catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia to Boston.
Mendez appeared in 12 games this season for the Rangers and has 42 career big league appearances, owning a 0-2 record with a 3.02 ERA. Opponents have hit just .199 against Mendez.
Mendez has a powerful arm, with a fastball that tops out in the mid-90s.
