Cody Franson being unsigned in September was a major surprise to just about everyone in hockey, but it appears the 28-year-old defenseman is on the verge of signing with the Buffalo Sabres.

ORIGINAL STORY: TSN’s Bob McKenzie reported Wednesday that Franson was in Buffalo and “expected to finalize” a two-year contract with the Sabres worth $3.3 million per season.
On paper, it’s a great fit for Franson, who likely would receive a ton of playing time as a top-pairing defenseman on an improving, but also rebuilding Sabres club.
Franson started last season with the Toronto Maple Leafs before being dealt to the Nashville Predators a few weeks before the NHL trade deadline. He set a career-high 36 points in 78 games between the two teams.
