David Beckham wants a certain “big man” to help his Miami Major League Soccer franchise open with a splash: Wayne Rooney.

Beckham wants Rooney to join his MLS expansion team when he ends his Manchester United career, The Star’s Steve Morgan reported Sunday. Beckham hopes to launch his Miami franchise by the 2018 season and wants to persuade his former teammate on England’s national team to take his talents to South Florida in a few years’ time.

“Becks, 40, believes Manchester United and England skipper Roo will be perfect to spearhead his long cherished plan to launch an USA soccer team in 2018,” Morgan writes. “Beckham has been inundated with calls from players and contacts within football who want to be part of the new team he plans to build with a start date penciled in for the 2018 season.”

The timing could be right to pair Rooney, 29, with Beckham’s MLS venture. Rooney’s mammoth contract with Manchester United expires in 2019. Beckham’s club might be able convince Rooney and Manchester United to end their lengthy association before his deal’s expiration date.

Rooney previously has vacationed in the U.S., and in June publicly stated he would consider playing in MLS one day.

Rooney to Miami could prove to be a match made in Manchester and England’s national team.
