Jordan Henderson has come to America for specialty care in an effort to help himself and Liverpool.

Henderson flew to New York City on Monday for treatment on the heel injury that has prevented him from playing for Liverpool for the past month, The Telegrapha’s Chris Bascombe and The Guardian’s Mark Dobson reported Monday. Henderson and Liverpool hope Tuesday’s visit with Dr. James Cozzarelli of the Advanced Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Institute will help him manage or eliminate the pain he feels when running.

Henderson reportedly isn’t considering surgery at this point but is expected to undergo a number of other procedures to determine the best course of treatment.

Henderson limped out of Liverpool’s win over Bournemouth on Aug. 17 and hasn’t played since.

Liverpool has drawn one and lost two of the three games it has played without its captain and leading central midfielder.

Henderson hopes to return to the field as soon as possible but probably won’t recover in time to play against Norwich City on Sunday in the Premier League.

Henderson joins Daniel Sturridge among Liverpool players who have turned to American doctors for help treating injuries. Sturridge underwent hip surgery in April in New York before spending lengthy stints in Boston and Los Angeles recovering and rehabilitating from the procedure. Sturridge is thought to be a few weeks away from making his long-awaited return.
