Tank Abbott’s craziness evidently goes well beyond the cage.
Abbott, who was an icon during the early days of UFC, had everyone scratching their heads this week when he made some controversial comments on his podcast about MMA superstar Ronda Rousey. Now, Abbott is facing backlash from the UFC community, though he’s not backing down.
Abbott, chiming in on the feud between Rousey and undefeated boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr., made it perfectly clear he thinks the man known as “Money” would easily take his female counterpart in a fight.
“At the end of the day, pretty boy Floyd would knock the living stuffing out of Ronda Rousey,” Abbott said. “She’s a girl. It’s all about this emotional stuff.”
That wasn’t all. Abbott took things a step further and issued a challenge of his own.
“I will fight any woman on this earth for free,” Abbott said. “If I win, which is going to happen, and you’re going to get bashed up good, you have to make me a sandwich. If you win, I’ll give you $100,000.”
Abbott’s comments didn’t sit well with UFC legend Frank Shamrock, who defended Rousey.
“I think Tank spends a little too much time on the bar stool,” Shamrock said, according to TMZ Sports. ” … He’d be submitted in 20 seconds. He’d be bent over in the ring throwing up all the alcohol.”
Brazilian mixed martial artist Vitor Belfort also took exception to Abbott’s remarks.
“I think Tank is wrong,” Belfort told TMZ Sports. “He’s a great fighter, but I think Ronda could beat him.”
“Speed always beats size. Thunder makes noise, lightning does the damage.”
We could sit here for days and argue about whether Abbott could or couldn’t defeat Rousey or any woman willing to step into the octagon with him. But the fact is it’s not going to happen — nor should it — and Abbott is out of his mind for even bringing up the scenario, especially in the way he did.
But hey, we already knew Abbott was a mad man.
