Arizona State will honor fallen soldier and former player Pat Tillman on Thursday night with new uniforms as part of the school’s weeklong “Salute to Service.”
Tillman, a former Sun Devil, was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in 1998, but he turned down a contract extension in 2002 to enlist in the U.S. Army following the 9/11 attacks. Tillman was killed in action by friendly fire in 2004.
Tillman helped lead Arizona State to an undefeated regular season in 1996 and a Rose Bowl appearance. The PT-42 uniforms the Sun Devils will wear Thursday against Oregon are modeled after that 1996 team’s get-ups and were designed in collaboration with Tillman’s family.
“Pat Tillman Foundation and Arizona State University have a proud history of supporting our nation’s veterans and military spouses,” Marie Tillman, president and co-founder of the Pat Tillman Foundation, said in a statement. “This special tribute honors Pat’s example as an athlete, scholar and soldier, while raising awareness and academic support for the Tillman Scholars who are carrying on his legacy. We’re grateful to Coach (Todd) Graham, the players and adidas for empowering these leaders as they continue their service to our country.”
