Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel still is under investigation by the NFL for his recent driving incident involving his girlfriend, Colleen Crowley, and alcohol. But even with the investigation being incomplete, the league still could discipline Manziel if it believes he violated the personal-conduct policy.
That includes placing Manziel on paid leave, according to the policy.
As ESPN.com’s Pat McManamon pointed out, the policy states: “If an investigation leads the Commissioner to believe that you may have violated this Policy by committing any of the conduct identified above, he may act where the circumstances and evidence warrant doing so. This decision will not reflect a finding of guilt or innocence and will not be guided by the same legal standards and considerations that would apply in a criminal trial.”
The so-called “prohibited actions” are described as “actual or threatened physical violence against another person, including dating violence, domestic violence, child abuse, and other forms of family violence” and “conduct that poses a genuine danger to the safety and well-being of another person.”
During the initial incident, Crowley told police she didn’t want to press charges on Manziel.
Manziel spent 10 weeks in rehab from January through April, although the purpose of the treatment never was stated.
