Cameron Brannagan’s Liverpool dream is alive and well.
Brannagan signed a new contract with Liverpool on Monday, the club announced on its website. Brannagan’s contract grants him more time to integrate himself into Liverpool’s first team and the opportunity to one day progress into an important player at his boyhood club.
Brannagan, 19, joined Liverpool’s Academy when he was five years old and has risen through the youth ranks ever since. He currently captains the U-21 team and is on the fringes of the first team, having debuted on Sept. 17 in the Europa League draw against Bordeaux.
U-21 coach Michael Beale said last month Liverpool was hoping to loan Brannagan to another club in order for him to gain experience, but that was under a previous managerial regime.
Former manager Brendan Rodgers gave Brannagan his first 10 minutes of first-team action, but Jurgen Klopp now will oversee the young midfielder’s development. Brannagan has been practicing with Liverpool’s first team since Klopp’s arrival and hasn’t featured in the U-21s’ last two games. However, Klopp hasn’t revealed his plans for Brannagan publicly.
Brannagan’s previous contract would have expired after this season, but he and Liverpool agreed to a new deal, which expires after the 2017-18 season, according to The Liverpool Echo and The Mail.
A number of players currently are ahead of Brannagan in Klopp’s midfield pecking order, but anything is possible for the local talent both in this time of transition and in the future.
