FOXBORO, Mass. — The New England Patriots wisely locked up running back Dion Lewis to a two-year contract extension Thursday.

The deal, first reported by ESPN’s Field Yates, has a base value of $3 million and is worth up to $5 million, a source told NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport. Lewis received a $600,000 signing bonus, Yates reported. His base salary is $800,000 in 2016 and $1.2 million in 2017. The deal also comes with $1.8 million worth of incentives.

Lewis was set to hit free agency next offseason after signing a one-year futures contract with the Patriots in December.

Lewis was happy to sign the extension, but his attention already has turned back to the Dallas Cowboys.

“It was a good feeling,” Lewis said. “Still got a lot of work to do. Just trying to stay focused and get ready for this week.”
