DeMarco Murray Frustrated, Claims Lack Of Touches In Eagles’ Offense

To say things haven’t gone according to plan in Philadelphia would be a massive understatement, and it appears patience in the locker room is starting to wear thin.

The Eagles are dead-last in the NFC East at 1-3 after losing to the Washington Redskins on Sunday. Their much-hyped offense has looked anemic, and among its biggest disappointments has been running back DeMarco Murray, who has 47 rushing yards on 29 carries this season after leading the NFL in rushing last season.

Needless to say, Murray has been pretty frustrated with the way things have unfolded. After Sunday’s disappointing defeat, that frustration boiled over into some not-so-subtle shots at Philly’s play selection.

“Do I think I’m touching the ball (enough)?” Murray said, via ESPN. “No, I’m not. I don’t think I am. But it’s the plays that are being called. I love this offense. I love playing with these guys. It’s just how it is.”

It doesn’t sound like you love it, DeMarco.

Of course, Murray has a legitimate gripe. The two-time Pro Bowl back has touched the ball 40 times (29 rushes, 11 receptions) through three games this season, an average of 13.3. That’s a steep drop-off from last season, when he led the NFL with 28.1 touches per game on the Dallas Cowboys.

Yet Murray by far has been the most ineffective back in Chip Kelly’s struggling attack. Ryan Mathews leads the team in rushing with 132 yards on 33 carries (4.0-yard average), while Darren Sproles has averaged 3.8 yards per rush (80 yards on 21 carries), both far cries from Murray’s brutal 1.6-yard average.

“I knew what I was coming here to do,” Murray added. “I knew I was going to be the guy. I knew Sproles and Mathews are two great backs. I knew a lot of guys touch the ball. That’s how they make a lot of plays. It’s about executing plays and us being better.”
