The New England Patriots’ Week 5 game against the Dallas Cowboys is a mismatch on paper.
The Patriots are coming off a bye week with a perfect 3-0 record after crushing the Jacksonville Jaguars 51-17 in Week 3. The Cowboys will enter the contest with a 2-2 record after suffering back-to-back losses, including a 26-20 overtime defeat last week against the New Orleans Saints.
Plus, the Cowboys again will be without Pro Bowl quarterback Tony Romo and superstar wide receiver Dez Bryant, both of whom are recovering from injuries.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones realizes his team must fire on all cylinders to score an upset in Big D. And he used an interesting analogy Friday to hammer home that point.
“This is David against Goliath,” Jones said on KRLD-FM in Dallas. “That’s good, because everybody does know David did get Goliath. So, it’s possible.
“So, anyway, it’s going to take that kind of effort for us. Offensively, we’ve got to continue to have minimal mistakes and we’re going to have to make some plays. I know it’s easy to say we’ve got to make them downfield, but we’ve got to get some 20 yards or more plays.”
It’s crazy to think of the Cowboys — once labeled “America’s Team” for both their on-field success and their off-the-field popularity — as playing the role of David. Likewise, it’s amazing to consider how far the Patriots have come over the last 15 or so years to be considered Goliath against Jones’ bunch.
