The University of Miami suffered an embarrassing 58-0 loss at home to ACC rival Clemson on Saturday, and it cost head coach Al Golden his job.
The school announced the decision Sunday night.
“Coach Golden has led our program through some very difficult times and he has done so with class, integrity and a true desire to see our students succeed on the field, in the classroom and in the community,” athletic director Blake James said in a statement.
“However, we have a proud tradition of excellence at Miami, not just in football but in all sports, and we want to compete for ACC and national championships. I simply believe that now is the time to bring the Hurricane Family together and rally behind our young men.”
Larry Scott, an assistant under Golden, will be the interim head coach through the end of the season.
Miami hasn’t played in a major bowl since beating Florida State in the 2004 Orange Bowl. The Hurricanes have lost four or more games in each of the last nine seasons dating back to 2006. They lost only 10 times in the six seasons prior to that.
Golden ends his Miami tenure with a 32-25 record in four-plus seasons. He led the ‘Canes to two bowl games, the 2013 Russell Athletic Bowl and 2014 Independence Bowl. Miami lost both of those contests.
The Hurricanes started this season 3-0, which included a good non-conference win over Nebraska. They went on to lose three of their next four games, punctuated by Saturday’s disastrous outcome.
