Michigan came so, so close Saturday to beating its in-state rival and continuing its Jim Harbaugh-led romp through the Big Ten.

The Wolverines led Michigan State by two with 10 seconds to play. The Big House was rocking. All they had to do was get off a punt and perhaps withstand one final Hail Mary bid by the Spartans.

Instead, this happened:

Michigan punt fumble

Michigan punter Blake O’Neill muffed a low snap, was unable to get a kick off and dropped the ball. Jalen Watts-Jackson scooped it up and followed a parade of blockers into the end zone, scoring the winning touchdown as time expired.

And with that, Michigan State, despite leading for a grand total of zero seconds during the game, left Ann Arbor with a 27-23 win to keep its undefeated season alive. Michigan fell to 5-2 and likely lost any chance of snagging a spot in the College Football Playoff.
