Mike Tyson is in Donald Trump’s corner.
The former heavyweight champion pulled no punches Monday when asked about the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Tyson made it perfectly clear he’s endorsing Trump.
“He should be president of the United States,” Tyson said in an interview with HuffPost Live. “That’s what he should be. He should be president of the United States.”
Tyson’s reason for backing Trump is simple. He wants to switch things up. A business-minded president like Trump could be exactly what the doctor ordered, according to Iron Mike.
“Let’s try something new,” Tyson said. “We tried (Barack) Obama, right? Time for a change. So we’ve got to change. So now let’s try something new. Let’s run America like a business, where no colors matter. Whoever can do the job, gets the job.”
Trump, of course, is a polarizing candidate, in large because of some controversial remarks he’s made about illegal immigrants. Those comments weren’t enough to dissuade the equally polarizing Tyson, though. As far as the ex-boxing champ is concerned, Trump might just be misunderstood.
“He didn’t know how to say it,” Tyson said. “He said really crude things. It was really crude. And he needs somebody to work with him on how to deliver his messages and stuff. But man, as far as what he did, he’s an average guy like everybody else.
“Until the end of time, people are going to say bad things about Latinos, they’re going to say bad things about blacks, bad things about any ethnic people. Whatever it is, that’s just what this country was built on. But it doesn’t stop us from striving. It doesn’t stop us from becoming president. … People can talk all they want, but we’re still doing what we thought that we could never do before.
“The man that runs the country is just what he is, he’s just a man. He needs time to grow, too.”
Will Tyson’s endorsement be a knockout blow for Trump? Probably not. But the man — Tyson, not Trump — once bit another man’s ear off, so it’s good to have him on your side, I guess.
