It appears a few teams will try to persuade Sean Payton to trade in his black and gold this offseason.
The New Orleans Saints head coach has two years left on his contract after this season, but ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Sunday that multiple teams are expected to inquire about Payton’s availability. The Miami Dolphins and Indianapolis Colts are among those clubs, according to Schefter.
Both the Dolphins and the Colts likely will be in the market for coaches with Indy’s Chuck Pagano and general manager Ryan Grigson reportedly not seeing eye-to-eye and Miami operating under interim head coach Dan Campbell after firing Joe Philbin. And Payton certainly would be an upgrade for either of them.
As Schefter noted, Miami has ties to Payton through Campbell, as the Dolphins tight end coach played under him with the Dallas Cowboys — where Payton was offensive coordinator — and with the Saints. However, Payton is an offensive mind, and he could be drawn to Indianapolis with a chance to turn quarterback Andrew Luck into more of a star than he already is.
But it might be wishful thinking entirely, as Schefter said there’s no indication if the Saints even would be willing to talk about letting Payton go elsewhere.
