It didn’t take long for Don Mattingly to find a new job.
Mattingly will be the next manager of the Miami Marlins after agreeing to a four-year contract, according to Vice Sports. It’s expected the Marlins will wait until the World Series is over to make a formal announcement, per the Vice Sports report.
Mattingly, whose five-year tenure with the Los Angeles Dodgers came to an end last week, will become the Marlins’ eighth manager since 2010. The Marlins haven’t made the playoffs since 2003, when they won the World Series. Since then, they’ve finished higher than third place just once. They’ve got four last-place National League East finishes since 2007, including three in their last five seasons.
Miami’s coming off a 71-91 season, which was good for a third-place finish, 19 games out of first place. The Marlins do have some good young talent, though. Giancarlo Stanton is arguably the best young power hitter in baseball, and Jose Fernandez has the ability to be the next great starting pitcher, assuming he can stay healthy.
