The NFL swept the visiting locker room at Gillette Stadium for listening devices Sunday after the New York Jets complained about radio frequencies and stadium operations, but according to the Boston Herald’s Jeff Howe, that was only the beginning of the story.
After the league looked for bugs, an NFL employee “interrogated” three Patriots employees about the situation during the second quarter of the New England Patriots’ 30-23 win, a source told Howe on Friday.
The sweep of the locker room and the 15-minute questioning of the Patriots’ employees produced “no evidence of wrongdoing,” according to Howe. However, his source said the league employee’s behavior toward the Patriots’ employees was “unprecedented.”
The source told Howe that a stadium operations manager eventually told the league employee to go through the Patriots themselves, but that was after the person took photos of the employees’ badges and asked to look at their radios and cell phones.
News of the reported sweep started Friday morning when Boomer Esiason told WFAN that the Jets asked the NFL to look for bugs in their locker room at Gillette. The NFL later released a statement denying the claim that the team made such a request. A source later told CSNNE’s Tom E. Curran that these sort of sweeps are “routine.”
