Here’s some new math: alcohol plus lousy soccer game equals fire department rescue operation.
That was the case Saturday in the town of Barnsley, England, when the fire department rescued a soccer fan from a locked Oakwell Stadium more than seven hours after the game he was attending had ended, according to The Star. The fan told firefighters he had “a few beers,” fell asleep on the toilet at halftime and awoke hours later.
He triggered the alarm system as he walked through the dark and empty concourse in search of a viable exit. He then went to the field, climbed on a structure and yelled into the darkness for help.
“We got the call through to attend Oakwell and usually its just a false alarm,” a Barnsley Fire Station spokesperson said, according to The Star. “But we turned up and saw this young lad on top of the portakabin trying to get our attention.
“We had to get the ladder to get him down. He had no shoes on and had lost his mobile phone and his hat.
“He was more bothered about his hat though, he seemed a smartly dressed lad.”
The fan missed the second half of Barnsely’s League One (English third division) loss to Fleetwood Town and what ever hijinks in which he normally engages on a Saturday evening.
Given his condition, that he sat out that night’s festivities probably is for the best.
