FOXBORO, Mass. — Brock Vereen should have an easier time acclimating to the New England Patriots than most practice squad newcomers.
His brother, Shane Vereen, played running back for the Patriots from 2011 from 2014 and hosted Brock in New England while the defensive back was still playing at Minnesota. Brock said his brother was “pretty excited” to hear about the practice squad signing Wednesday.
“Being around here while I was still in college, (being) familiar with some of the guys definitely helps,” Brock Vereen said Friday in the Patriots’ locker room.
Vereen singled out linebacker Dane Fletcher as a player who has been beneficial in showing him the ropes around Gillette Stadium. Vereen already has a positive impression of the Patriots since becoming a member of the team.
“It’s only Day 3 or whatever, but it’s very professional, as cliche as that sounds,” Vereen said. “It’s easy to see why they’re so successful here.”
Vereen played safety with the Chicago Bears, but he’s been practicing with the Patriots at cornerback. The Patriots might need him sooner than later, since No. 3 cornerback Justin Coleman hasn’t been practicing because of a hand injury, leaving just three healthy players at the position.
“Whatever they need me to do,” Vereen said. “However I can help the team, I’m willing to do that.”
Vereen played 16 games with the Bears, starting four and recording 39 tackles with one interception and one forced fumble.
