CC Sabathia’s decision to enter rehab, at least to those on the outside, seemed a little odd.

The New York Yankees left-handed pitcher announced right before the team entered the playoffs that he would be entering a rehab facility in an effort to battle alcoholism. Some wondered why Sabathia would do so right as the team’s focus should have been on the postseason.

In his first interview since entering rehab, Sabathia said he finally just knew it was time for him to get the help he needed.

“It was the last day of the season,” Sabathia told Robin Roberts in a “Good Morning America” interview that aired Friday. “That weekend I had kind of started drinking … (I) thought nobody was paying attention and, you know, I was isolated by myself — stayed in my room the whole weekend. I think it was October the 4th, Sunday and (I) woke up and just felt like I needed help.”

The southpaw says he’s feeling better, although the efforts obviously continue. He heard from all of his Yankees teammates throughout the process but said players from all across baseball. That includes Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz, who reached out to Sabthia, too, the New York pitcher said.
