For the first time in his football career, Denver Broncos wide receiver Demaryius Thomas may have a new set of eyes watching him: his mother’s.
Katrina Smith, the mother of Thomas, has never watched her son play any level of football. She has been in Florida Federal Prison on drug trafficking charges since Thomas was 12 years old, but she was one of 46 people who had their sentences commuted by president Barack Obama in July.
All could finally change Sunday as Smith was released from prison earlier this week.
“It was crazy,” Thomas told KUSA-TV in Denver. “It was actually the night before. She was supposed to get out Monday or Tuesday I think, but she got out Monday night at 12. She called me. She was saying, ‘I can’t sleep.’ It was probably about twelve this time, so she was up at 2. She called me and was like, ‘I’m going home.’
“I was hoping that she could try to get out here or (I could) try to go see her, but I have work days for me and she can’t travel right now.”
Thomas and Smith are hoping she can make it out to see him play in person sooner than later.
“I have to talk to the probation officer,” Thomas said. “I hope that I can talk to him (Thursday) and see what we can do because I want to get her out here to a game before the season is over. Right now they say it will be 60 days before she can travel, but I’m going to try to get her out here before then.”
In person or not, Smith gets to watch her son play football. She is free. That’s all that really matters.
