Sunday won’t be the first time Brock Osweiler has taken the field against Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.
Denver’s backup QB, starting Sunday in place of injured starter Peyton Manning, actually saw the field in the epic 2013 overtime game in which the Patriots staged a 24-point comeback and won the game on a Stephen Gostkowski field goal.
Osweiler, 6-foot-8, was instructed to join the special teams group and try to block Gostkowski’s kick due to his height and wingspan.
“I was confused on that,” Osweiler recalled, via the Denver Post. “I was like, ‘Coach, you want me to go in?'”
He didn’t get a finger on the kick, and New England won the game, 34-31.
“Yeah, that has nothing to do with what’s going to take place this Sunday,” Osweiler said.
Manning has plenty of experience against Brady and the Pats, and though he’s only 5-11 in games versus his rivals, he’s been a big help to Osweiler in preparation.
“Peyton has been great to me,” Osweiler told the Post. “He’s talking me through all of his past experiences against the Patriots. He was helping me out at practice, asking me questions. I love having him around. It’s a great brain to pick.”
