Mets tattoo editWe understand being passionate about sports: it’s why we do this job for a living. But there are certain lines that probably shouldn’t be crossed when it comes to fandom that all too often get left in the dust.

Among the simplest but most common errs in judgement? Getting a tattoo, especially one that prematurely crowns your team the world champions of its particular sport, like one New York Mets fan did last month.

For starters, we’re not all Broadway Joe Namath, so typically when we guarantee wins we lose. Plus, there’s this very important aspect of sports called superstition that probably means if you declare your team to be the champions in permanent body ink before it happens, the universe will come back to haunt them — and you.

But not all bad sports tattoos declare champions. Some of them just make us wonder why anyone would ever want that permanently on his or her body — like a garden gnome wearing your team’s sweater or Shaquille O’Neal portraying “Kazam.”

To each their own, we guess.
