FOXBORO, Mass. — The New England Patriots still have an open spot on their 53-man roster after a series of transactions Thursday.

The Patriots promoted linebacker Eric Martin from their practice squad to the 53-man roster. Many expected the Patriots to add an offensive tackle or running back because of recent injuries, but Martin could provide depth at linebacker if Jamie Collins sits out another game with an illness.

The Patriots also cut safety Dewey McDonald, reopening a spot on their 53-man roster.

Martin began the 2015 season on the Patriots’ 53-man roster but was cut Sept. 12. He signed to the Patriots’ practice squad Oct. 1.

McDonald was claimed off waivers from the Indianapolis Colts on Oct. 28. He played one game with the Patriots as a special teamer.
