Real Madrid fans love to hate everything Barcelona, but Andres Iniesta made them change their ways for a moment in time.
Fans at Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu Stadium applauded Iniesta on Saturday during Barcelona’s 4-0 win in a game known simply as “El Clasico.” Iniesta walked off the field to applause in the 77th minute when Barcelona coach Luis Enrique substituted Munir for the legendary midfielder.
All Iniesta did to deserve the accolade was deliver one of his finest performances and score his first goal in 14 games in all competitions this season.
Iniesta, 31, joins Diego Maradona (in 1983) and Ronaldinho (1985) among Barcelona players whom Real Madrid fans clapped off the field in praise of performances against their team, according to Spanish newspaper AS.
Iniesta was typically low-key when asked about the Bernabeu tribute.
