The Boston Red Sox added a four-time All-Star to their bullpen Friday night.
The Red Sox acquired closer Craig Kimbrel in a trade with the San Diego Padres, with FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal the first to report the deal before the teams confirmed it.
Boston sent four minor leaguers — outfielder Manuel Margot, infielder Carlos Asuaje, left-hander Logan Allen and shortstop Javier Guerra — to San Diego to acquire Kimbrel. All four were ranked in MLB.com’s top 30 Red Sox prospects, with Margot No. 3, Guerra No. 6, Asuaje No. 23 and Allen No. 25.
Kimbrel, the 2011 National League Rookie of the Year, has pitched in parts of six major league seasons with the Padres and Atlanta Braves. He recorded 39 saves with a 2.58 ERA in 61 games for San Diego last season, his first with the team.
Kimbrel is owed $11 million in 2016 and $13 million in 2017, with a $13 million team option or a $1 million buyout in 2018.
