Report: Barry Bonds Being Considered For Marlins’ Hitting Coach Job

The Miami Marlins might swing for the fences with their next hiring.

Barry Bonds is under consideration to become a Marlins hitting coach, according to CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman. Team higher-ups reportedly have been discussing the possibility quietly for weeks.

Frank Menechino, who spent the last two seasons as Miami’s hitting coach, is expected back, but the Fish reportedly would employ two hitting coaches to accommodate Bonds.

Bonds, who last played for the San Francisco Giants in 2007, is Major League Baseball’s all-time home run king with 762 career bombs. His legacy forever will be tainted by his link to performance-enhancing drugs, though, and his return to baseball as a full-time coach certainly would be huge news.

Bonds, a seven-time National League MVP, is one of the greatest hitters who ever lived despite the steroid allegations that cast a dark cloud over his playing career. It isn’t known whether he’s willing to move across the country for a hitting coach job with Miami, according to Heyman, but the former big league outfielder has been working on fixing his image and has a love for coaching.

Bonds has worked with the Giants as an instructor during spring training in recent years.
