Sergio Ramos paid a heavy price for glory Sunday.
Ramos scored a sensational bicycle-kick goal for Real Madrid in its La Liga (Spanish league) loss against Sevilla, but injured his shoulder in the process. The Real Madrid center back acrobatically shot home Isco’s corner kick in the 22nd minute to give his team the lead.
Ramos didn’t celebrate his goal. His shoulder pain’s the most likely reason why, but he also might not have wanted to make more of a scene after scoring for the second time against his boyhood club at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium.
Ramos dislocated his shoulder on Sept. 15 in Real Madrid’s Champions League win over Shakhtar Donetsk. He missed four games before returning in early October.
Defenders in Spain don’t often score goals, let alone with bicycle kicks.
Ramos clearly is the exception.
Ramos tried to play through the pain in his shoulder but he withdrew from the game 10 minutes after scoring.
Rafael Varane replaced Ramos at center back, and Sevilla soon began exploiting the veteran defender’s absence. Ciro Immobile scored the game-tying goal in the 36th minute. Ever Banega and Fernando Llorente scored in the second half to give Sevilla a 3-2 win.
